Sports and Fitness Expo a great success!
On Saturday May 12th more than 100 people came out on a beautiful spring day to enjoy various sports activities, and learn about opportunities in the area for people with disabilities.
Some of the highlights included:
- A challenging rock wall, which was set up by Rhode Island Rock Gym. It was an exhilarating feeling to reach the top for those who had never tried rock-climbing, and for some more experienced climbers who love the challenge.
- SCUBA diving provided by Simply SCUBA. The Expo gave participants an amazing hands-on opportunity to learn about SCUBA, and get into the gear and the pool to experience the weightless, quiet underwater world of SCUBA. Several people expressed interest in pursuing a new-found interest in SCUBA diving.
- Kayaking demos. Many participants found their sea legs in a2a’s kayaks in a pool environment with an experienced guide at their side, which was a great way get a feel for the boats and the experience.
- Bicycling demos. Bike-On.com came with an array of bikes to try, from hand cycles to a unique buddy bike that puts the rider with a disability up front for a fun wind-in-the-face ride. Participants were able to get on the various bikes and take them for a spin.
The key sponsors of the event were CVS Pharmacy – All Kids Can, a2a, the Governor’s Commission on Disabilities, the National Disability Sports Alliance, and the Rhode Island Department of Health.
The event was held at Rhode Island College in Providence, a perfect setting with the pool for scuba and kayaking, the gym for trying out bikes and other games and events, good outdoor space for the rock wall, all at a convenient, accessible location.
We hope to see many of the people we met at this event at upcoming modules, please remember to check this site for dates and times for activities!
June 24th - Trout Fishing
| They don't call us Access2Adventure for nothing! On Saturday, June 24th, four adventure seekers braved the rain and joined Erin and Jenny for some trout fishing in Carolina, RI. One thing is for sure; the fish like the overcast days! They were a bitin'. Partcipants caught a number of small fish. As for trout, there were two big enough to take home and one who got away just as they were reeling him in. Ah shucks! Despite the rain, there were smiling faces! Next time we're bringing a barbeque picnic. Join us in the Fall for another fun filled fishing adventure! |
